Happy Birthday to me.
Happy Birthday to me.
Happy Birthday to me.
Happy Birthday to me!
Two years ago my birthday was during a 20-day silent vipassana retreat.
Last year it was on the John Muir Trail.
This year it is on The Long Trail.
Notice any patterns here? Alone in a quiet place. Embraced by Silence and Nature. A few good people around who were not chosen by me to be there. All delicious!
I don’t┬átake a single picture all day… Never crosses my mind.

Big footsteps passed by the cabin in the night. Sherman sat up rigid. He didn’t bark. I thought it was a moose. Wilson thought it was a bear. Sounded like hard feet hitting the ground rather than soft ones to me. But I have no correlating experience at all.

There are 3 mountains in our future today. Up, up, up the first one. Then the others are small dips and rises to their peaks. The mind still wants to make up that this section will be easier. It’s not. It’s different. But not easier.

Got up and started. No lazy morning today. I need to get to Eden and our food resupply. Actually 4 boxes waiting there. Food. Bounce box. A raincoat — Ruffwear Cloud Chaser — for Sherman. And misc things I discovered at Bob and Chris’ that I wanted in the bounce box. We’re walking by 8:15.
I assume it’s a 5.5 mile downhill to the road to Eden. Surprise! It’s up a mountain first. Then down to VT 118. It’s pretty easy hiking compared to what we’ve been through the last 5 days. Sherman has gotten much smarter about the boggy areas. Jumping from rock to rock to tree trunk laid in the mud. But he slips off a couple times and is mud to the belly.

This is a good example of Vermuddy Bog. This could be 2 inches deep. Or, it could be 6 inches deep. Or, it could be a foot deep. Only one way to tell.

The forecast is for rain from midnight until 10. 12-6 heavy with thunder. 6-10 light.
It begins about 5am with a distant thunder and the sky opens and pours water down on the mountain. It’s torrential until about 7. Then lightens up, ending about 9:30.
The group starts packing about 8. A little before 10 they head down a 2-mile very steep Frank Post Trail to a trailhead parking lot where busses will take them back to school.
10am. It’s cloudy. Cool. Quiet. We’re sitting on the bed with the front window and door open.
fullsizeoutput_2023This is an amazing camp design. This big front window opens to the view. The only one I’ve seen so far that has this feature. Lovely…

I woke up here at Grampa Grumps about 7am. Took Sherman for a walk and got some coffee and a banana nut muffin. Then back to the room to pack. I was also thinking about ordering a new iPhone. Want a shower.
I organize our stuff into functional piles and start packing. I want to be hurrying, but I’m not. I try to eat the muffin. It’s horrible. Very processed. I’m spoiled by simple, natural food. I eat cold pizza from last night. I give Sherman sliced turkey I bought him. He has a few bites and then turns up his nose. I put it in his bowl. He sniffs. Walks away. I take a shower and he eats his turkey. I go back to packing.
