0816 Winnipeg, MB – Tuesday

0816 Winnipeg, MB – Tuesday

My #1 mission for the day is to totally unpack the van. Go through all the boxes and shuffle some things around based on usage. This will be the 2nd time I’ve done the usage shuffle. And, while the van is empty go to vacuum and wash the car.
We talked ’til about 10. Dan was done with his project and planned to golf in the afternoon. Beth walked Sherman while I worked on the van. She took some great Sherman pics!

I get up and take Sherman for his morning walk. He is totally mesmerized by squirrels. Rabbits are good. Cats are good. Birds are good. But squirrels are the best.

I think I’ve found a place for him to run that’s fenced in behind the Montessori School than has taken over a prior public elementary school. But, as Sherman and I walk the perimeter of the fence I find two open places. One is the actual entrance about 3 feet wide. The other is the space under a double gate about 8 feet wide. Too much to cover. Mr. Sherman would definitely find these during his own fence inspection. This is not an issue today as Beth and I are going to a beach about an hour away on Winnipeg Lake. A lake as big as the Great Lakes. It has tides. You can’t see across it.

0814 Winnipeg, MB – Sunday

I awoke the first morning, Sunday, and thought about how long to stay. How long is not an imposition? I thought leaving Tuesday would be a good. When I told Beth that I thought I’d leave on Tuesday, she said she hoped I’d stay longer. Nice… 🙂
After a homey breakfast, Dan continued working on his project, and Beth, Sherman and I walked downtown to the Winnipeg Art Gallery. I wanted to see a show of Inuit Sculpture. The exhibit of historical sculpture was closed. There was a musical event in the same gallery.

We’ve driven 3838 miles.
In the morning there’s no one there to accept our fee and no place to place the money. So, I accept the gift of another free night in a campground. Maps says it’s about 2 hours to Winnipeg. We start driving about 8, so I’m guessing we’ll get there about 10.
But, we pass a really nice city park in Starbuck and stop for breakfast. I make some oatmeal and feed Sherman. We’ll now arrive around 11.

I was hoping to take Sherman for a good walk on the early morning golf course. But it was thick it’s both dew and mosquitos. So, a short walk and Sherman in the van and me in the shower. Not the ambiance of a beautiful CA State Park, but all the amenities.
We headed east. I noticed all the small county dirt roads that criss-cross the farmland and thought I could take Sherman for a run-walk in one of these. I chose one and was looking for a good place to stop that wouldn’t interfere with any traffic. Within five minutes two cars passed me going at least 100 kph. Wrong road.

Today is a driving day. We get up and drive. Our target is to get past Medicine Hat, Saskatchewan, and head south to Canada 13 to finish the eastern journey to Winnipeg. Or, in internal terms, to get off the freeway. To let the body release the accelerated vibration of freeway driving. To return to driving through places people live.
It’s a long drive. As we approach Medicine Hat, I stop to look at the map to choose which southern exit to take. I choose Gull Lake. We exit there and drive through town in 5 blinks into vast wide-open prairie, dotted with building clusters that are farm houses, barns, and other out buildings. We’re driving about 90 kph instead of 120 kph.
